Joel, we both know that if fossil fuels reflected their true full costs - monetizing and including in their prices all the negative externalities, as economists call the economic losses and damages that private firms leave to taxpayers and ratepayers to clean up or suffer the health consequences - people would swiftly embrace the lower cost options like solar and wind power. Alas, we have uninformed opinions failing to recognize this Private Gain and Public Pain reality.
